A Leader Who Creates Opportunities, Removes Barriers, and Believes in Every Student
October is National Principals Month, a time to recognize the school leaders whose vision, commitment, and daily service make a lasting difference in the lives of students, families, and educators. At Lakeview School, we are proud to celebrate Dr. Theresa McGowan, a leader whose work reflects the belief that every student deserves an opportunity to succeed.
As principal of Lakeview School, Dr. McGowan has helped shape a school culture centered on relationships, accountability, opportunity, and hope. Leading an alternative school requires far more than managing the daily operations of a building. It requires understanding that students may arrive with academic gaps, behavioral challenges, interrupted schooling, difficult life experiences, or simply the need for a fresh start. Dr. McGowan has consistently worked to ensure that Lakeview is a place where those challenges do not define a student's future.
Under her leadership, Lakeview has continued to strengthen its approach to personalized student support, restorative practices, social-emotional learning, academic intervention, credit recovery, and graduation planning. Rather than focusing only on where students have been, Dr. McGowan encourages staff to focus on where students can go next.
That commitment has produced meaningful opportunities for students. Lakeview has expanded its focus on college, career, and workforce readiness, helping students see that success after high school can take many different forms. Whether a student's next step is college, a skilled trade, military service, career training, or immediate entry into the workforce, the goal remains the same: helping young people leave Lakeview with a realistic pathway toward a productive future.
Dr. McGowan's leadership has also helped strengthen partnerships throughout the community. Grants, career programming, academic supports, mental-health resources, and community relationships have allowed Lakeview to provide students with experiences and resources that extend beyond the traditional classroom.
The results can be seen in the accomplishments of Lakeview's students. During the 2025–26 school year, 20 students graduated, representing an increase from the previous year. Students also earned additional credits through summer programming, and Lakeview achieved a 95 percent FAFSA completion rate, helping graduating students access financial aid and consider opportunities beyond high school. The school also received a $10,000 innovation grant, supporting continued efforts to create meaningful learning opportunities for students.
Dr. McGowan's dedication to students and educational leadership was recognized across Durham Public Schools when she was named the 2024–2025 Durham Public Schools Principal of the Year. The recognition reflects what the Lakeview community sees throughout the year: a principal who remains focused on students, supports her staff, encourages innovation, and believes that education can change the direction of a young person's life.
Perhaps one of the most important parts of Dr. McGowan's leadership is her belief in second chances. Alternative education is often about helping students reset, rebuild, and recognize possibilities they may no longer see for themselves. At Lakeview, students are reminded that a mistake, a suspension, a failed class, or a difficult chapter does not have to become the conclusion of their story.
That philosophy is reflected in the work of the entire Lakeview community. Teachers, instructional assistants, counselors, support staff, administrators, families, and community partners work together to help students become stronger academically, socially, and personally. Dr. McGowan's leadership provides the foundation for that collective effort.
National Principals Month provides an opportunity to recognize the countless responsibilities principals carry each day—the meetings, difficult decisions, classroom visits, parent conversations, student conferences, emergencies, celebrations, and planning that often happen quietly behind the scenes. For Dr. McGowan, those responsibilities are ultimately connected to one purpose: creating better opportunities for students.
This October, the Lakeview School community proudly celebrates Dr. Theresa McGowan for her leadership, perseverance, compassion, and commitment to ensuring that students know they still have a future worth working toward.
Thank you, Dr. McGowan, for believing in the possibilities within every student and for continuing to lead Lakeview with purpose.
Happy National Principals Month!
